molten glass on wood recycled green beer bottle

the molten glass on wood collection

These stunning, molten glass objects d’art bring together the best of the natural and the man-made worlds, they are earthy and chic, and they are practical and spiritual.

We have the traditional molten glass on wood collection, and we also have the more recent set of the same pieces but this time they are blown from recycled beer bottles, hence the striking green colour.

Transforming discarded beer bottles and Gamal Wood into molten glass on wood works of art offers a beautiful marriage of aesthetics and sustainability.

Each item is unique as they are blown and relaxed around natural sustainable Gamal wood roots, and so the recycled glass is shaped to fit.

We have some ourselves – check out the recycled beer bottle in our Gallery.

Handmade in Indonesia – Made of recycled beer bottles – Each piece is unique.

manufacturing molten glass on wood

Balinese molten glass on wood products are unique: a beautifully constructed blend of local craftsmanship, tradition and artistry. Here’s a breakdown of the process:

  1. Wood Selection: Artisans use specially chosen wood with interesting shapes and textures, often opting for naturally occurring forms like roots or branches. Gamal wood is known for its durability and is a popular choice.

  2. Glass Preparation: Recycled glass is crushed and placed into a furnace where it is heated to extremely high temperatures, causing it to melt.

  3. Glass Blowing: A skilled glassblower uses a blowpipe to gather molten glass and blow it into a bubble. The glassblowers manipulate the shape using various tools and techniques.

  4. Wood and Glass Fusion: Once blown, the red-hot glass bubble is carefully brought down and positioned onto the prepared wood surface. The intense heat of the glass can slightly char the wood, creating a natural fusion between the two materials. The exact fit is determined by the unique shape of the wood.

  5. Shaping and Finishing: Depending on the desired final form, the glassblower might further shape the glass while it’s still malleable. Once cooled and solidified, the piece may undergo additional finishing touches for a polished look.

It’s important to remember that this is a traditional craft, and the exact steps might vary slightly.

Please note: Due to the handmade nature of this product, sizes and designs can vary slightly. There may also be some minor imperfections in the glass such as small bubbles and light scratches – this is normal.
